Mobile Adhoc Network

In this ever demanding and ever growing technological age, everyone’s waiting for what’s new. What’s new?? , manet. It is what everyone is talking about. It is the latest technological advance in the field of data networking which has made the connectivity between mobile devices easier and cheaper as well as independent of any central infrastructure. Now mobile devices following various protocols can interconnect even in the most impossible and disastrous scenarios.

WHAT IS AN AD-HOC NETWORK ??

Ad-hoc network is a self configuring multihop wireless network, which relies neither on fixed infrastructure nor on predetermined connectivity….

COMPARISON BETWEEN WIRED AND WIRELESS NETWORK
Wireless network pros
Very convenient in the home, especially for laptops
Easy to set up
Less clutter
Wireless cons
Slower transfer rate
Can ‘drop out’ occasionally
Not as secure

Wired network pros
Faster transfer rate
More secure
Wired cons
Not convenient if you wish to use your laptop anywhere in the house

WHAT IS A MANET ??
Manet is the abstraction for mobile ad-hoc networks. MANET is a type of ad-hoc network that can change locations and configure itself on the fly.. Because MANETs are mobile they use wireless connections to connect various networks. In simple terms what it means is that now mobile devices among themselves can form a temporary connection or network for interchange of data. It is a collection of mobile nodes(devices) forming an ad-hoc network without the assistance of any centralized structure. It can hence be very useful where infrastructure is either lost or not cost effective to deploy.

Histroy of MANET??

The history of manet begins in 1972 with the first generation of manet called
Prnet (packet radio networks) by darpa (defense advanced research projects agency) . Together combined with aloha (), csma (carrier sense medium access) and a distance vector routing algorithm these prnet were used in battle or combat scenarios.
The second generation then arrived in 1980’s when ad-hoc networks were enhanced and implemented as a part of suran (survivable adaptive radio networks) program. It was the first milestone achieved which reduced the cost and size of devices to a large extent.
In 1900’s with the arrival of notebook computer’s the idea of collection of mobile nodes was proposed at several research conferences (ieee 802.11).meanwhile further advances in the field produced gloma (global mobile information systems) and ntdr (near-term digital radio).
Third generation of manet is what we have today ,that is jtrs (joint tactical radio systems).these are one of a kind and the most advanced models available today.

ADVANTAGES OF MANET
Easy and speed deployment..
No dependence on infrastructure..
There is a wide range of fields on which manet has proven it’s forte. It is an upcoming technology which can be used in various business environments where the need for collaborative computing might be more important outside the office environment than inside, to provide disaster recovery services in terms of network communication very quickly which is not possible with wired communication, various military applications, to provide unity of communication between devices such as printers and digital assistants and many more.
APPLICATIONS
Personal area Networking..
Military environment..
Civilians environment..
Emergency Operations..

Conclusion
In conclusion, we can say that though manet is still in developing and evolving stages of its span, it has already made an impact on the global stage. We cannot disregard the
Uses and applications of manet due it’s flaws.it is one technology which still
Has a long way to go and still a lot to prove in terms of durability and usability. It is one technology which can totally eliminate the concept of wired communications and it is sure that this technology will be the next big thing in the coming future.
